Back to school celebration at Pine Villa Elementary School, Aug.19

The Office of Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez, Pine Villa Elementary School, City Year and the Marlins hosted a back-to-school celebration August 19 for needy children in south Miami-Dade County.

The event, facilitated by the county’s volunteering initiative, featured Billy the Marlin, an inflatable batting cage, McDonald’s Happy Meals and provided 400 backpacks and school supplies. Radio Disney provided the tunes and donated books to the school’s library.

The kids enjoyed an afternoon of games and goodies. Tamika Terry’s stepdaughter will start first grade at Pine Villa, 21799 SW 117th Ct. in Goulds. With six other kids getting ready to go back to school, Terry said she was grateful for the event.
