The HIV/AIDS epidemic is devastating the African American community, yet it remains one of the most ignored realities. The numbers are mind-boggling:
•Every 9.5 minutes, someone in the U.S. is infected with HIV.
•Every 35 minutes, a woman in the U.S. tests positive for HIV.
•An estimated 100,000 African Americans have HIV but don’t know it.
•Some 131,992 African American men and 64,615 African American women were living with AIDS at the end of 2007.
•40 percent of individuals diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in the U.S. are African Americans between the ages of 15-29.
