EL PASO — Pifas Silva is watching the opening montage from comedian Gabriel Iglesias’ new, El Paso-filmed Comedy Central special, “I’m Not Fat … I’m Fluffy,” which debuts at 7 p.m. Sunday on the comedy network.

“This is cool,” said Silva, communications manager for the El Paso Convention and Visitors Bureau, which runs the Plaza Theatre. “There’s The Equestrian. They showed a Border Patrol vehicle, of course. There’s the Downtown skyline from Scenic Drive, the Ysleta mission..”

He ticks off one familiar image after another, including the State Line’s sign, the Sun Bowl and, of course, the Plaza Theatre, where the 33-year-old California comedian taped his third special, and second for Comedy Central, on April 25. National Public Radio also taped its popular “From the Top” radio show at the Plaza last June.

“It showed the icons of El Paso,” Silva said of the montage. “This is definitely positive for us and it, I guess, is true to what El Paso has to offer — a unique culture.”
