Dear Mr. Inman: My daughter is reading John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men” as I did at her age in high school. I vividly remember seeing on TV in the late 1960s or early ’70s a production of it that followed the novel to the letter, including all the profanity the book contained. I think it may have been a Hallmark production, and would like to make sure I’m not dreaming.
The actors in the movie fit the characters unlike any other movie version I have seen. — The Bull in the Adirondacks
Dear The Bull: There have been several versions of “Of Mice and Men,” and the one you recall aired on ABC in 1970. It featured George Segal as George, Nicol Williamson as Lennie, Will Geer as ranch hand Candy and Joey Heatherton as Mae.
Other versions include the 1939 film with Burgess Meredith as George and Lon Chaney Jr. as Lennie; a 1981 TV movie with Robert Blake as George and Randy Quaid as Lennie; and a 1992 film version with Gary Sinise as George and John Malkovich as Lennie.
