Oprah Winfrey took a step forward in the struggle against sexism when she announced to the audience at Maria Shriver’s Woman’s Conference in California last week her new network, OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) would not allow any shows to use the B-word.

According to The Daily Caller, Oprah told Shriver her new network “will be fun and entertaining without tearing people down and calling them bitches.”

“Imagine that,” Winfrey said to cheering women’s groups. “Imagine.”

Winfrey’s speech came on the hells of The View co-host Joy Behar, who had repeatedly called Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle a “bitch.”

Though Oprah’s announcement is welcome support towards the fight for respectful treatment of women, Jennifer Pozner, executive director of Women in News and Media, says that women still have a long way to go to gain equality in the media.

“Ninety-seven percent of the people who set agendas in media companies are men,” Pozner said to the Daily Caller. “So it becomes a little bit easier to understand in that context why many outlets don’t think it is a problem to call women ‘bitches.’”
