Penguins vs Coyotes
The Penguins broke a 2-game losing streak with a 4-3 shootout win over the Phoenix Coyotes tonight at Jobing.com Arena.
Mark Letestu, in his first career shootout attempt, scored the winner.
It was the first shootout of the season for both teams.
Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury got pulled just 6:56 in the game after giving up two goals.
The Coyotes took a 1-0 lead at 2:36 of the first period on a goal by Eric Belanger after Wojtek Wolski threaded a pass across the slot to Belanger after a breakdown by Penguins defensemen Deryk Engelland and Brooks Orpik.
It took a video review for Phoenix to boost that to 2-0. Radim Vrbata was cutting in from near the left goal line when he was tripped by Engelland. Vrbata’s shot slid under Fleury just as Vrbata knocked the net off of its moorings. The play was ruled a goal and Engelland’s tripping penalty was rescinded.
That prompted Penguins coach Dan Bylsma to yank Fleury in favor of Brent Johnson. Fleury gave up two goals on five shots.
The Penguins nearly got their first goal at 11:08 of the first period. Sidney Crosby got his own rebound and lifted the puck through a crowded crease and past Coyotes goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, but it was ruled that an interference penalty against Penguins winger Pascal Dupuis occurred beforehand, negating the goal.
