Sausalito Art Festival
No offense meant to all the other summer festivals around the Bay Area, but the Sausalito Art Festival — held every Labor Day weekend for the past 58 years — has consistently been the best. Not only is the art first-rate (it’s a juried show and gets some truly unique artists), but also the food is excellent and not from the predictable vendors. Then there’s the music, provided by much bigger names than you normally see and hear at a fest. This year, the lineup includes the Bangles, the Fixx and a reunited Modern English (Saturday), Dave Mason and the Tubes (Sunday) and the Jefferson Starship and Mavis Staples (Monday). The festival will be held 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at Marinship Park in Sausalito. Admission is $5-$20 (www.sausalitoartfestival.org), with free shuttle bus service linking downtown parking lots and the Sausalito ferry landing to the festival gates. And taking the ferry from San Francisco may be the way to go, with construction around the Golden Gate Bridge making for some tough driving.
