Although statins such as Lipitor and Zocor are widely used to prevent heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular disorders, new research shows that the class of drugs may actually have negative effects on some cardiac patients.
A new study presented at CHEST 2009, the 75th annual international scientific assembly of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), on Thursday found that statins have beneficial effects on patients with systolic heart failure (SHF), but those with diastolic heart failure (DHF) experienced the opposite effect, including increased dyspnea, fatigue, and decreased exercise tolerance.
According to the Mayo Clinic staff
* If the only risk factor you have is high cholesterol, you may not need medication because your risk of heart attack and stroke is probably already low.
* Lifestyle changes are essential for reducing your risk of heart disease, whether you take a statin or not. Quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet, getting daily activity and managing stress are examples of lifestyle changes that will improve cholesterol, and most all of the other risk factors for heart disease. In fact, lifestyle changes may have a greater impact on reducing risk of heart disease and stroke than does medication alone.

Glad to read this sensible article. The cholesterol scare scam and statin over-promotion for just about every condition to counter emerging truth about the drug and threatening the river of money to dwindle to a trickle. Naive and trusting me I accepted my doctor’s direction to take Lipitor. He is a good doctor, but also a victim to be straight-jacketed by the practice guidelines expecting him to follow to keep his licence. He is concerned that I stopped taking the drug 7 months ago, that I will have a heart attack. I researched all medications prescribed for me and for some others I advocate for and my self education netted valuable information that is buried under thick layer of propaganda in Big Pharma’s rubbish heap.
The same reputable medical journal that carried research 20 YEARS EARLIER and the findings never been disproved carry now corrupted research and propaganda masquerade as credible science! We certainly need drug companies and life saving drugs but companies can operate ethically too. A few do. I wish to alert to a website that I found illuminating, timely, independent and lifesaving:
