US Healthcare – New York governor defends soda tax

(Reuters) – New York Governor David Paterson reiterated his position on Monday that a tax on sugary soft drinks is needed to curb obesity and recoup some of the billions of dollars a year spent on healthcare to treat people with diabetes and other diseases.

NEW YORK, March 8 (Reuters) – U.S. stocks barely budged on Monday as hopes stirred by AIG’s (AIG.N) sale of a unit and McDonald’s (MCD.N) upbeat sales were offset by falling healthcare shares after President Barack Obama’s criticism.
