It’s a moment full of tension and possibility. Lying innocently coiled up in a black plastic bowl is a small cluster of gold chains. On one side of the table sits a man valuing them. On the other side sits 48-year-old Georgina Place, a well groomed, blonde housewife from Midhurst in West Sussex, waiting to hear how much her chains are worth.
“It’s not as if they’re anything special, just things I found in the bottom of my drawer,” says Georgina, with somewhat studied breeziness. “No sentimental value or anything. In fact, of the four pieces I brought in, I thought two of them probably weren’t made of gold anyway.”
